作者出生在奥地利﹐是犹太人﹐原名Sylvius Leopold Weiss﹐1926年归信伊斯兰﹐改名为穆罕默德‧阿萨德。 他的祖上是犹太教的宗教世家﹐犹太教经典和希伯莱文是家庭教育传统﹐1920年他到巴勒斯坦研究犹太古代史，目睹了犹太复国运动﹐因此开始研究伊斯兰和阿拉伯文化﹐考察了周围许多伊斯兰国家﹐如土耳其﹑沙特阿拉伯﹑苏联的中亚﹐最后选择成为穆斯林﹐在印度定居﹐支持印度穆斯林独立建国运动。 巴基斯坦建国之后﹐他归为巴基斯坦公民﹐担任新建国家的外交工作﹐1947年被巴基斯坦政府委任为驻联合国大使。在他归信伊斯兰之后参加穆斯林解放运动时期﹐写了许多书﹐阐明伊斯兰的现代观点﹐如《通往麦加之路》《古兰经的启示》《布哈里伊玛目评述》《这就是我们的法则》和《伊斯兰在十字路口》《不浪漫的东方》等。
